Spent Mayfly Spinner

Here is a pattern of mine tied to represent a spent mayfly spinner (Ephemera danica - female).

It has caught trout for me on the large limestone lakes in the west of Ireland.

A lot of the water supply reservoirs in the UK are stocked with rainbow trout (usually triploids) and these are fished from bank and boat by a lot of fly fishing anglers.

Many of the natural lakes contain wild brown trout and these are again fished from bank and boat by a lot of fly fishing anglers.

The techniques used for the rainbow and browns are a bit different; but as I am sure you realise there are no hard and fast rules in fly fishing - Mr.Trout will always do the unexpected.

To explain both reservoir and lake fishing in any detail will need another long post - will try do something over the next week or two.
