Hi flyfishermen!
I'm a guy from Torino, Italy. I'm 26 and I will be in Montenegro next week on vacation.
I'll spend about 3 days in the Durmitor National Park with 3 other friends and I'll love to try fly fishing in your Tera river and other streams nearby.

Can someone help me with any information about that?
I've heard about it from a friend of mine that had been there already but he could not tell me certain news about it.

For example where is/are the no kill zone/s on Tera river exactly?
Do I need the national fishing licence or just the no-kill licence? Where I can buy it and how much does it costs?
Do I need waders or I can fish just with shorts? Is the water temperature too cold for that?

And, in the end, wich insects can I find in Tera waters in this period?

Hi Francesco and welcome !

As you will be in Durmitor national park it is closest for you to fish at Tara river ,part that belongs to NP.It is kill zone and day permit is (i think) 20euros.
You can buy it in Žabljak or at some keepers .

And you need waders or you may say goodby to your legs
Tara in that part is damn cold

First no kill fly fishing only zone is near town Kolašin.That is 2 hours driving from Žabljak and that is right place for you if you ask me...
Insects:brown and black ant and small caddis flies....

Unfortunatly I am the only fisherman of the group and I can't take away the car for the whole day!

...but i saw that there is a train station in Kolašin! Do you know if there is any possibilities to get and to leave to the no kill one by train in day?



Notice that in my travel I will stay in Kotor, Sveti Stefan and near Durmitor National Park so I can pick the train from one of this places (or close to them).

Sorry for asking you so much questions but I would like to try new places to fish and your rivers sounds really good... I can't resist!!!!


P.S. Anyone can suggest me an accomodation in the Durmitor area to stay?

forget trains....too slow and paintfull
You can do it in one day by bus (or something) from our sea cost ,travel to Podgorica and to Kolašin,fish couple hours and go back ...but I recomend to left your palls at sea and go only for fishing......

p.s.there is lot of accomodation in the Durmitor area to stay but i cant recomend anything particular

Hi Maui!

I am in Kolašin now, staying in "Djevojački most" , flyfishing friendly hotel. Come here and catch many grayling and trout.
Tie some CDC sedge flies on size 14 and go to riffles. If you like FF on quiet pools, prepare midges on sizes 18 and 20.
Do not be suprised with BWO or small baetis hatch, so bring some small olives. If you like nymphing, the best choice will be segde larvas and pupas...

How was your trip to Montenegro?

The trip was amazing!
Unfortunatly I stayed just 2 nights in Zabljak and I could fish just one time.
I went to Tara river in Durmitor National Park.... WONDERFUL!!!! ...But when I asked to a ranger for the fishing license he told me that was the day off and I couldn't fish (I have to say thanks to the fly fisher guy who translates and explains me some rules because the rangers didn't speak english).

I never saw so many very big graylings feading on little ants ! Even if I couldn't fish it was worthed the trip on the Tara.

Than I decided to fish in the other spot available: the Crno Lake. I just fished a couple of hours, the conditions and my equipment ( 8' 6" 4# with a 5# on the reel) made fishing difficult beacuse trouts were preatty far from the band but I stll caught a nice fish (near 500 g) in a beautiful place as the Crno Lake!
Surely it will be better if I could use the boat but they said to me that fishing form the boat was forbidden .


This was my experience in Crna Gora but I hope to come back soon because the Tara (and I'm sure the other rivers also) deserve a fishing trip.

I am glad that you like Montenegro and I am sure that you will come again.
Crno jezero(Black lake) is only one jewel at Durmitor,there is 16 more .But if you like fly fishing at lakes you must see Plav lake,bolive me,worth of coming
You can check out our rivers and lakes at forum,and not only montenegrian,you may see other Balkan resorts as well

Hi Maui, next time do not stay in Zabljak. The rivers good for flyfishing are away from this mountain city. I suggest next time for you, city of Kolasin, becouse this city is in the center of Montenegro, with beautiful river Tara near, and the rest of the rivers is all very easy to visit, from this town. If you like lakes, form Kolasin you easy can visit and go fishing to Biogradsko lake, and Plav lake, and this two lakes are very beautiful.
