| February Red (Taeniopteryx nebulosa & Brachyptera risi)

| A search of modern and antiquarian UK angling literature reveals a significant list of artificial fly patterns ... identified as representing the ‘February Red’; here is just a selection:
FEBRUARY RED (Fly Patterns For the Rivers & Lakes of Wales- Moc Morgan 1984) Hook: Size 12 & 14. Thread: Red. Body: Red wool. Rib: Gold wire. Hackle: Dark brown partridge.
FEBRUARY RED (The Art of the Wet Fly - Roger Fogg 1979) Hook: Size 14. Thread: Reddish claret. Body: Reddish claret silk showing at the tail, remainder dubbed light brown seal’s fur. Hackle: Dark grizzle dun. Wings: Speckled hen.
FEBRUARY RED (A Book On Angling - Francis Francis 1867) Hook: Size 14. Thread: Orange. Body: Two turns of dirty claret-red mohair at the tail and medium brown mohair with a strand or two of hare’s ear and claret thrown in for the rest of the body. Wing: A slip from the back of a peahen. Hackle: Dark grizzled blue dun cock.
FOUR WINGED BROWN (Trout & Salmon Fishing In Wales – George Agar Hansard 1834) Hansard describes the pattern as “sometimes called the Red Fly, the Peacock Fly, Dark Brown, Dark Claret etc.” Hook: Size 14. Thread: Yellow. Body: Ruddy black sheep’s wool mingled with orange. Rib: Yellow floss. Hackle: Yellowish brown hen.
OLD JOAN (Trout Fishing from All Angles - Eric Taverner 1929) This is a pattern is described as having its roots in the Llangollen area for use on the Welsh River Dee. Hook: Size 14. Thread: Claret. Body: Dubbed orange seal’s fur dressed ‘rough’. Hackle: Blue Dun.
OLD JOAN (A Dictionary of Trout Flies - Courtney Williams 1949) This pattern is described as a Lancashire dressing. Hook: Size 14. Thread: Claret. Body: Dubbed claret seal’s fur dressed ‘rough’. Hackle: An under covert feather from a woodcock’s wing.
PARRY’S STONE FLY (Fly Patterns For the Rivers & Lakes of Wales- Moc Morgan 1984) Hook: Size 14. Thread: Crimson. Body: Claret quill. Hackle: Dark rusty dun.
PARTRIDGE & ORANGE (Fly Patterns For the Rivers & Lakes of Wales- Moc Morgan 1984) Hook: Size 14. Body: Orange silk. Hackle: Brown partridge.
PEACOCK FLY (Fly Fishers Guide – G.C.Bainbridge 1840) Hook: Size 14. Thread: Mulberry. Body: Dark peacock herl. Wings: Starling tied flat over the body. Hackle: Grizzle. (Note: Alfred Ronalds in “The Fly Fishers Entomology 1836” provides a different dressing for the Peacock Fly and describes it as being used as a beetle imitation). RED FLY (The Fly Fisher’s Entomology - Alfred Ronalds 1839) Hook: Sized 14. Thread: Brown. Body: Dubbed red squirrel fur mixed with an equal amount of claret seal’s fur, showing mostly claret at the tail. Wings: Softest feather from a pea-hens wing feather tied flat. Legs: Dyed claret.
RED FLY (Handbook Of Angling - Edward Fitzgibbon 1847) Hook Size 14. Thread: Brown. Body: Dubbed dark red squirrel fur, mixed with an equal quantity of claret coloured seal’s fur; showing mostly claret at the tail. Wings: From a ginger-dun covert feather of a mallard’s wing. Hackle: Dyed claret.
RED FLY (A Concise Treatise On The Art Of Angling – Thomas Best 1808) Hook: Size 14. Body: Dubbed red squirrel fur. Wings: A dark drake’s feather. Hackle: Natural red cock. Note; an identical pattern to this is also given by Charles Bowlker ... in his “Art Of Angling” – 1854 | |

| Hi Mix That is a good question and I'm not sure I have the answer. I've just tried to reproduce the patterns as they have been descibed in the old books where the majority of them are wet fly patterns. I think the reason may be that the only adult stoneflies available to fish in any number are the egg laying females that either dip down or run/swim on the surface to depsit their eggs and many of these get washed away by the currents; it would make some sense to imitate this stage and these 'drowned' flies may be the reason why many of the old traditional stoneflies patterns were tied as wet flies. But I don't know that for sure. Some of the patterns from the old books are already described with cock hackles and I'll tie up and post some of these soon. I also think adding a cock hackle to many of the wet patterns would also produce dry flies that would catch fish. Ray | |
