March Brown

Hi
Two patterns March Brown tied by a friend of mine.
The Metz brown / ginger speckled hen saddle hack he has used in the patterns fooled me into thinking there was brown Partridge in the dressings - until I got out my fly tying strong Spectacles and then I was not sure what he had used, so I got around to reading the details dressing that he had sent with the flies! What a great feather, but from my internet search they are not easily found in the UK.

I didn't find hen hackle that suit this from above but I dyed some partridge with picric

And here is the result

thread-yellow
tail-bronze mallard dyed with picric
body-olive dub
wings-polypropilen
hackle-partridge

Also I did one wet... ..just in case

Howdy Madjoni!

Be aware of that bloody "picric acid" - there can be some "yellow washouts" in your fly box, if you forget to treat your wet flies with dry shake powder, just before you store them !!! I've had a really bad experience with this in the past ...

Nice flies - I didn't know that picric will wash out; when I have dyed feathers in the past I use diluted vinegar to fix the dye.

I have used brown partridge in the past tied in the paraloop style as in the pattern below.

Last year I saw the first Brown on March 5th March - all the nymphs I have seen this year are not ready to hatch, the UK has had a long cold winter.

I will post some photos Sat imago in the Entomology section.
