The colour is a bit light for me - even for the spinner.

In the UK we know the March Brown female spinner as the Great Red Spinner - here is an old photograph (from 1983)

Must try to get a better example this year.

Ok - understand it will change colour when wet - I guess it is the trout who will decide if you passed the test


Here is a pattern I have used for a few seasons with some success. Again the colour changes when wet and the tying thread tends to show through.
As you can see it relies on a distributed CDC hackle to keep it afloat.

I've also a Parachute/klinkhamer version.

I also use rust brown coloured Uni-Thread sometimes - it works just as well.

In about the second week of the March Brown 'season' I often find that brown trout get switched onto the emerger right in the surface film. I have a pattern based on the dry fly above - but it doesn't work as well and your pattern has just set my 3 brain cells working.

I have noticed that at the point of emergence, when the nymph is right in the surface film, for a very short time the insect becomes much lighter in colour with the paleness of the gills becoming the predominant colour. Maybe at that point in the life cycle the answer is a pale emerger pattern - the patterrns I've been trying are much dark in colour than your fly which from it's design will sit in the surface film.

Maybe it's an EUREKA moment

Mine is that this insect change colour with temperature.....

I agree with your thoughts on insects changing colour - especially Large Dark Olive Duns, in the spring when its cold they are much darker in colour than those

I see in the autumn.
